Annual Report 2005-2006 Overview
Listuguj Education Directorate (LED)
The Education Directorate was first formed in December of 1992. Prior to this employees were reporting directly to the Chief & Council. The Education Directorate was issued a mandate to construct and operate a school here in Listuguj and to ensure that the Mi'gmaq language and culture was interwoven into all aspects of the students' education. As a result of the mandate we systematically began to relocate our students to Listuguj beginning with Nursery and Kindergarten in September of 1993.
The Listuguj Directorate currently employees 66 staff in the administration area and at the Alaqsite'w Gitpu School. Of the 74 employees 81% are Mi'gmaq or of Native ancestory and 19% are non-native.
Alaqsite'w Gitpu School
Through the efforts of the Education Staff and Jigug Enterprises the Listuguj Mi'gmaq Government was successful in its bid to have a 4.1 million dollar school built here in Listuguj. The construction of the school was completed in September of 1997.
The name of the school was chosen from several names submitted from a "Name the School" contest. Alaqsite'w Gitpu translates to mean, 'The eagle will soar'. The winner of the contest, Leah Metallic believed that our own community school would give our children and their children the opportunity to go beyond the limits and to continue to soar despite our trials and tribulations. It is appropriate that the eagle and the Mi'gmaq are once again re-gaining their strength as is evidenced when visiting with our students at the Alaqsite'w Gitpu School and while observing eagles who can once again be seen on our Islands (M'nigul) located on route to Matapedia, Qc.
There are now approximately 285 students registered at the Alaqsite'w Gitpu School from Nursery to Grade 8.
"Ask yourself...Is it in the best interest of our students?"
Over the last year the Listuguj Education Directorate had adopted a slogan to ensure that all decisions are based on the interest of the students collectively and individually where possible.
